Classifying data, meta-data
Background: Classifying data involves labelling and grouping datasets to provide context. In the renewables Industry/SMEs the wide range of Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) and technology platforms available has prevented the use of common taxonomies in asset data. Although the data available from these assets (such as SCADA and alarm logs) are similar, direct comparison across the Industry/SMEs is not possible due to a lack of consistent data formats and the unavailability of meta-data. Innovation: In offshore renewables, classifying data could involve the creation of common taxonomies between turbine types or mapping alarms to specific turbine components. This metadata would allow for direct comparison of different technologies, could be used to optimise O&M processes and would provide a means of Industry/SMEs-wide benchmarking. This level of understanding would enable Owner Operators to have a better understanding of the performance of their assets and could be used to optimise operations and maintenance (O&M) processes.
Type of Entry: Innovation Area
Requires implementation offshore: No
Start TRL: TRL 4
Target TRL: TRL 7
Enabler: Research Technical Organisations
Beneficiary: Owner Operators
Strategic Outcome: Maximising operational performance of existing wind farms
Forecast Start: 2022
Forecatest Finish: 2025
Potential to Reduce LCOE: Low
UK Benefit: High
Case for Intervention: High
HSE impact: Low
LCOE Notes: Wouldn’t significantly reduce LCoE but in long term it would allow industry to optimise their operations.
UK Benefit - notes: The main driver for this is collaboration between industry. This could be done in any country but is UK well positioned to do that with an independent moderator such as the Catapult.
Intervention - notes: An independent body will need to organise industry to be able to collaborate in this way.
